The purpose of this study is to analyze trend in the market share of generic drugs after the first generic entry and to estimate it as a functional form. We analyzed the market share of 53 groups of drugs, of which the first generic had been marketed after 2012, using National Health Insurance claims data. According to the result, the market share of generic drugs is estimated to be 19.68% after 12 months and 30.45% after 24 months from the time of the first generic entry, and is expected to converge towards 39.35% in the long-term. In addition, the trend of market share varied across the sub-group classified by ATC code and dosage form. The results of this study can be used to predict the market share of generic drugs, and would be valuable as basic data to assess the impact of new policy on the pharmaceutical market in terms of entry of generic drugs and trend in their market share.
